The Definitions & Stand-ins

Sender – a person /group with a message to give to an audience. The president of a new association.

Receiver – a person/group who receives a message/information. The officers and members of the association.

Encoding – the process of taking a message and putting it in a communication medium. Creating the logo for the new association.

Decoding – the process of converting the message into useable information for the receiver. The members of the group seeing the logo for the first time and interpreting what it means.

Channel - the chosen medium that a message travels in. The different places that the logo will be seen.

Noise – media/information that interferes with the message. Conflicting ideas that may be present when the members of the group see the logo.

Short Story

The president of a new association (sender) wants a logo (message) designed that will encompass the main theme of the group. After receiving some information, several logo concepts are developed (encoding) and given to the president. After receiving feedback, the logo will be finalized and put on the website, newsletters, and other correspondents (channel). The members of the association (receivers) will interpret (decoding) ideas about the group from the logo, although there still may be confusion based on other factors (noise).

The Questions

If congress were considering the following law: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

Would you approve it? Do you agree or disagree with the freedoms? Explain. Which do you support, and which do you think are excessive or provide too much freedom? Do you recognize this law? (more…)

Intellectual Property Definition

The thoughts or ideas one created in their mind is theirs to own. If someone else wants to use the thought/idea they must ask permission and perhaps even buy it from the person who originated the thought.

Here’s what Dicionary.com says: intellectual property

n.  A product of the intellect that has commercial value, including copyrighted property such as literary or artistic works, and ideational property, such as patents, appellations of origin, business methods, and industrial processes.

Web 3.0

The experts are projecting that the future of the internet will be more of a personal assistant and not just a resource for information. Instead of just connecting information, the internet would act as a database where it stored information about your previous searches and tastes to accurately give you information that you want. In this version of the web, instead of just doing a keyword search, the web would interpret the context of your search allowing you to enter sentences like “where’s a nice place to go for a birthday dinner?”

The Old and the New October 21, 2009

While listening to KUOW Radio Podcast: Your Brain on New Media, there one particular segment that got me thinking. They talking about the culture in Japan and because students have to travel for so long, they have started to text each other constantly. They don’t always have anything to say, they just continue to “ping” each other. The podcast explained that they were looking for a connection with another person. In some ways, this is how I feel about print. It is a connection between me and the information. It is something that I can keep with me and know that I can always have it. With so many things digital nowadays, there sometimes is not an actual connection with the information. (more…)

Media and Descriptions

Modern Cinema

Modern cinema has told stories, given ideas, frighten and inspired people, and entertained for many years. Columbia Pictures is presenting this film as a way to give a visual representation of what they believe might occur in 2012.

Mayan Calendar

The Mayan calendar is an ancient stone that the Mayan’s created to help keep a record. They believed that the world went through cycles and that the world was in its fifth and final cycle. They made sacrifices to postpone the end.

Internet

There are blogs, stories, articles, etc. on the web spreading the story and information of the Mayan Calendar. The internet is today’s soap box preacher saying that the end is near. It is a fast way of getting the word out. (more…)

A Little Story About Mass Communication/Media October 5, 2009

One day, two little girls were getting ready to play outside. It was a nice early spring day, and the girls were excited to be outdoors. They had been stuck inside during the long winter and were ready to play in the tree house that they had built last summer. They packed up lunches, the board game Monopoly, and a radio and headed out the door. (more…)
